John is successful in early identification of changes in investment and technology trends and is known for his creative solutions to problems and strategic opportunity identification. Education as a CPA and lawyer preceded a fast track progression to positions of increasing responsibility, industry expertise and broadening business experience. As an advisor to the Seattle University Software Engineering Masters Degree program, John sponsored several six person software development teams in one year projects exploring systems for several industries. Applications were varied in purpose and technology employed; examples include an AI based in-take system for Washington State’s Child Protective Services, collaborative groupware tools, a “software blueprint” CASE tool, investment decision aids and a systems engineering framework environment. John has served as an investor in, and director of, software companies.
John was CFO for William E. Boeing, Jr.’s family office. He founded and was Managing General Partner for Aldarra Associates, an “Evergreen” type venture capital fund which pioneered a project based structure. He screened all investment opportunities, performed due diligence and negotiated the terms and conditions of investment. Aldarra acted as lead investor on several occasions. He has had extensive director experiences include policy making on: litigation, including a shareholder strike suit; strategic planning; annual operating plans; executive compensation; executive recruiting; financial oversight and Canadian and SEC reporting; board governance; and negotiating strategy for acquisitions and/or financings. John has served as an independent director for 15 public and private companies with committee membership and chair leadership for all the standard board committees but also special committees for M&A and investigations and as Chairman of the Board.
